Elizabethan England

Elizabethan England – by Joyce Marques Luz

Women are treated almost in the same way along the years are passing through. The woman normally is humiliated, treated as nothing, treated as slaves for men in society, and do not having the same rights as them. We are like a trash for most of them. Women sometimes are their's property, subservient to them, for making their wishes and desires without complaining or denying. In sometimes, the woman is totally submissive even more and do things that actually she did not want to. The worst thing is that when they do not do these things, they are radically punished for it, holding on and swallowing every pain and obligation.

In the Elizabethan England epoch, it was not different, women were dependent on men, had to marry someone that they did not want to, just to make alliances with powerful families and please their parents.

Some women were gone unnoticed, escaped to some convent and did not have the right to marry. But if not, girls about 12 years old were given to old or new men to get married and do domestic services.

Somehow or other, some girls were succeeded to have some education. Depending on the family that she was sold, (because the weddings were practically for this) she could have tutors and learn some languages, to read, dancing, or singing. But, girls' duties in the weddings were being a good wife and having to have heirs to their husbands. They had to give dowry, properties, and material goods for the husbands without even blinking.

John Knox, a Scottish religious reformer man who led a religious reform in Scotland along the Calvinist line, wrote:

"Woman in her greatest perfection was made to serve and obey man, not to rule and command him"

, making everyone believe in it and making women duties in society being each time more difficult. In this quote, we may see clearly about the chauvinism that we had to pass through over the years. How the thoughts of some men were worse than we have nowadays. We clearly see how much negligible and insignificant we were or are.

But in fact, women are as important as men. Without us, men would not have their heirs to make them 'happy', they would not have who to fulfil their dark or light desires, not that we must do it, what they really want, but we do it because we love some man, we love the way we feel next to him, even if that person is totally toxic to us. Because these are what we really are.

Even after every fight that we did and we, women, are going to do. We are always going be the same. We will or are dumb girls that are, or will be, in love and will do some wrong thing to finally realize that this is not correct. That we do not need any boy to live.

We have arms, we have legs, we have our own lungs and heart. We do not need anybody to dictate rules of what we may or not do. We can be politicians, we can be engineers, we can be doctors. We can be whatever we want to be and we do not have to ask permission from anyone.

But, in that epoch was totally different, because society's rules made women's life difficult and limited. Even with girls being queens alone, society judged that women did must be housewives and mothers. In that epoch, after a lot of people dying, a woman who had a child was seen with a God Bless.

In a patriarchal society, women were considered as the weakest gender. Women could not have a job, could not have a career. Women could not make plays on theatre. Even if the play's person was a girl, it must be interpreted by a man.

Women did not have the right of voting, now we do, we could not inherit the noble titles of the parents before, now we can have any title that we want. About the way we did not have the right od inherit the titles made fathers wish to have boys, not girls, as their child. Because, they actually wanted to see their kids growing up and becoming a very well succeeded man, not a future 'slave' girl. Now we can do a lot of things that we conquer over the years.
